Patches

Patches challenges you to build rectangles across a grid. Use spatial reasoning to fit every piece and complete the puzzle.

Patches: Fit Every Piece Into The Puzzle

Anyone who has ever enjoyed spatial puzzles or tiling games will undoubtedly be captivated by Patches from the very first move. Far more than just filling empty spaces, the game challenges your powers of observation and spatial analysis based on a precise algorithm: each level has exactly one unique solution that can be fully deduced through the process of elimination.

Read The Clues Before Drawing

Each puzzle contains a grid with clues that help determine the shape and size of the rectangles you need to create. Pay attention to three details before placing a piece:

  • Shape symbols: These indicate whether a piece should be square, wider than it is tall, or taller than it is wide.
  • The numbers: this is a key detail to keep in mind, as they dictate how many squares you are allowed to color in. It’s a nice little brain-teaser that makes the game even more engaging.
  • Clue placement: Each piece must contain exactly one starting clue, so its boundaries need to be planned around the available space.

Find Where Each Piece Can Fit

  • Start by looking at clues near the edges and corners of the board. These positions often have fewer possible directions for a rectangle to extend, which can make them easier to analyze.
  • Next, compare the numbered clues with the surrounding empty cells. A piece must have the required area and shape while staying within the grid. If a particular empty cell can only belong to one possible piece, that restriction may help determine its boundaries.

Don't rush to fill every open space. Sometimes, working on a different section first will reveal which dimensions are possible for a piece you previously couldn't place.

Create, Check, and Adjust Your Pieces

Patches lets you draw rectangles directly on the grid by dragging between corners. Watch the visual feedback as you create a piece: the game may use different outline colors to indicate whether your selection follows its placement rules.
