There are two words, one vertically to the right and one horizontally across the bottom. Instead of playing words, you use the on-screen keyboard to choose individual letters and place them on a 5x5 grid. If the guess was correct for horizontal words, vertical words, or both, the colour of the letter will change after each guess. A letter can be placed on any square at any time. After you finish the daily game, you can choose to play other games.
If you choose an orange cell and then a white cell in the grid, the white cells will no longer be usable. Don't try to guess the answers to both words in the orange boxes, even if you get one right. When your guess is incorrect, you lose. If there's a sun in the top right corner, that means you've been checking in with the game every day. Each of the two orange answer grids can only be attempted once.
